Each species has a different run timing and ecology. Chinook are the largest, with Columbia River fall fish averaging 15 to 25 pounds and exceptional fish over 50 pounds. Coho run smaller (5 to 15 pounds typically) but are aggressive biters and great sport fish.

Pink salmon return in massive odd-year runs to Puget Sound rivers. Steelhead are anadromous rainbow trout that return to natal rivers and grow to 20 pounds, with summer-run and winter-run strains depending on the river. White sturgeon, a prehistoric species, grow to massive sizes in the Columbia, with catch-and-release fish over 9 feet caught from time to time. The bigger rivers like the Hoh fish best on the falling side of high water. On the Columbia at Buoy 10, troll cut-plug herring with a flasher in the tide changes; the morning incoming tide is often the magic window.

For Puget Sound chinook, mooching cut-plug herring or trolling spoons behind a flasher are the proven techniques, and tide flow at the Point No Point and Point Defiance area is critical. On the Yakima River for trout, fish from a drift boat with experienced rowers and match the hatch closely; the salmonfly hatch in late May is the calendar highlight.
