Game Fish Species You'll Find in Nebraska

Walleye are the headliner: Nebraska is one of the best walleye states in the country, with Lake McConaughy producing trophies up to and exceeding 12 pounds and dozens of other reservoirs holding strong populations. White bass and their hybrid cousin the wiper (white bass crossed with striped bass) are wildly popular; Big Mac wipers exceeding 18 pounds have been recorded. Largemouth and smallmouth bass occupy nearly every reservoir, with smallmouth particularly strong at McConaughy, Merritt, and the Missouri River. Channel catfish and flathead catfish thrive throughout the state, with flatheads at Harlan County and on the Missouri reaching 80 pounds.

Blue catfish exist on the Missouri River downstream. Crappie (white and black), bluegill, yellow perch (a Sandhills specialty in some lakes), and pumpkinseed are abundant. Northern pike are present in some Sandhills and panhandle waters. Muskellunge are stocked in Merritt and a handful of other lakes.

Fishing Licenses and Regulations in Nebraska

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) manages all fishing regulations. A resident annual fishing permit is approximately $38, and a nonresident annual is around $87, with one-day and three-day options. An aquatic habitat stamp is required in addition to the permit for anglers 16 and older. A trout stamp is needed to keep trout.

Statewide walleye, sauger, and saugeye combined daily limits are typically four fish, with a 15-inch minimum on most reservoirs (specific lakes have higher minimums). Bass daily limits are six combined largemouth and smallmouth with a 15-inch minimum on most reservoirs and a 21-inch minimum on some specific waters. White bass and wiper limits are generous (15 daily) to encourage harvest. Crappie limits are 15 daily on most waters.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Nebraska

Most Nebraska fishing is open year-round. The white bass and wiper runs up the North Platte River into Lake McConaughy peak in May and early June, and anglers line the inlet for some of the most spectacular fishing of the year. Walleye spawn in April, and McConaughy's spring shoreline bite from late March through May is legendary. Catfishing peaks May through October.

The Missouri River paddlefish snagging season runs in the fall (typically October) by permit. Ice fishing on Sandhills lakes and Merritt is excellent from late December through early March, with perch and walleye the primary targets.

Local Fishing Tips for Nebraska Anglers

For Lake McConaughy walleye in spring, walk the north shore in late March and April with jig-and-grub combinations or stickbaits like Smithwick Rogues; cast parallel to the shoreline at first and last light. The famed white bass run up the North Platte at Big Mac's inlet peaks in May, and a chartreuse jig or small spinner produces nonstop action. For wiper, work topwater poppers and chuggers over schools busting baitfish on the surface in summer. Smallmouth bass at McConaughy and Merritt key on rocky points; drop-shot rigs and tube jigs work well.

Sandhills natural lakes are often weed-choked by mid-summer; fish them in May, June, and again in October when water cools. For Lake Ogallala trout, a small spinner or marabou jig in the deeper holes below the dam outflow is the classic method, and winter fly anglers swing midges. Niobrara River smallmouth respond to small crankbaits and tubes worked through riffles. For paddlefish, follow Game and Parks rules carefully and bring 100-pound braid; you are snagging a 60-pound prehistoric fish in heavy current.
