The state contains more fishable water per square mile than just about anywhere on earth: the lower Mississippi, the Atchafalaya Basin (the largest contiguous river-swamp wetland in North America), Toledo Bend, the Red River system, hundreds of bayous and oxbow lakes, and over 7,700 miles of tidal coastline counting every island and inlet. Cajun and Creole communities along the bayous have fished commercially and recreationally for generations — sac-a-lait (the Cajun French name for crappie, literally 'milk sack' for the fish's pale flesh) appears in cookbooks as far back as the 1800s, and bowfishing for buffalo and gar in flooded swamps is a continuous tradition stretching from indigenous practice to today. Sac-a-lait (white and black crappie) are arguably the most pursued freshwater species statewide; spring spawning runs in the cypress backs of Lake D'Arbonne, Bistineau, and Caddo are part of the calendar for Louisiana families. Bluegill, redear sunfish ('chinquapin'), and warmouth fill in the panfish slot. Channel, blue, and flathead catfish are abundant in every river system.

Anglers 16 and older need a Louisiana fishing license, available as resident or nonresident, basic or saltwater. A separate saltwater fishing license is required to fish in tidal waters or to take saltwater species. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) sets daily creel and size limits that change periodically.

Speckled trout: 15 fish daily with a 13-inch minimum at most areas, but the state has implemented stricter rules in recent years in response to declining biomass — check current LDWF rules before each trip. Redfish: 5 daily within the 16- to 27-inch slot limit, with one fish per day allowed over 27 inches in most areas (the state recently moved toward a more conservative slot — verify current regulations). Largemouth bass: 10 daily statewide with 14-inch minimum on most major reservoirs, 16-inch minimum on Toledo Bend (special interstate rules with Texas). Sac-a-lait/crappie: 50 daily at most lakes.

Tarpon: typically catch-and-release with a special tag required to harvest. Red snapper, grouper, and other federally managed species are governed by NOAA Fisheries seasons and are subject to in-season closures. Louisiana fishing is a 12-month proposition. Spring (March through May) brings sac-a-lait spawning runs that fill cypress trees with crappie, prespawn bass on Toledo Bend and Caney Creek, white bass running up the Ouachita, and the start of speckled trout schooling in the marsh. Summer (June through August) is tarpon season at Venice and Grand Isle, deep yellowfin tuna at the rigs, mahi and wahoo offshore, and topwater speckled trout on the early-morning flats. Bass fishing shifts to deep ledges, hydrilla edges, and night fishing on the lakes.

Fall (September through November) is the redfish bull run, with massive schools of breeding-class reds in passes and the marsh. Speckled trout school heavily in the marsh as water cools, and freshwater bass move shallow on Toledo Bend. Winter (December through February) is the trophy speckled trout season at Big Lake, deep crappie on jigs in 15-20 feet of water, and bull redfish under the lights at jetties.

Local Fishing Tips for Louisiana Anglers

First: check the tide and the wind — both more than the weather. Inshore Louisiana fishing is dictated by tidal flow and wind direction; a falling tide pushes bait out of the marsh and concentrates redfish at drains, while a rising tide pushes them in. Second: hire a guide for your first Venice or Big Lake trip. The marsh is enormous, the channels are not always marked, and a single bad turn can put you 10 miles from the launch.

Third: don't ignore the public boat ramps. Louisiana has hundreds of free LDWF-maintained ramps along the coast and on every major river — many of the best fishing is within a 15-minute run of public access. Fourth: bowfishing is a real thing in Louisiana — alligator gar, common carp, buffalo, drum, and more are taken by bowhunters in shallow swamp water. Fifth: Louisiana weather can be punishing. Summer heat and humidity are dangerous; carry water, polarized sunglasses, and a UPF shirt.
