Fishing Heritage in Montana

Montana is the cathedral of American fly fishing, the place writers reach for when they need a setting that justifies the religious vocabulary they keep wanting to use. The state's 170,000 miles of rivers and streams, much of it cold, clean, freestone water tumbling out of the Rocky Mountain Front and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, support one of the most genetically diverse and self-sustaining trout fisheries in the world. Long before A River Runs Through It made the Blackfoot famous and Robert Redford turned it into a film, the Salish, Kootenai, Blackfeet, Crow, Cheyenne, and Assiniboine peoples built their seasonal cycles around bull trout runs, cutthroat spawning gatherings, and the harvest of whitefish and suckers from rivers like the Yellowstone, Missouri, and Flathead. Lewis and Clark's 1805 ascent of the Missouri produced detailed journal entries on cutthroat trout (named for Captain Lewis: Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi), and the expedition's portage of the Great Falls cataracts opened a window onto a region that the wider United States barely knew.

The transcontinental railroad in the 1880s brought sport anglers from the East. By the 1920s and 1930s, lodges along the Madison, Big Hole, and Yellowstone catered to fly anglers from coast to coast. Montana made a critical decision in 1974 that has paid dividends ever since: the state stopped stocking catchable hatchery trout in rivers that had self-sustaining wild populations, betting that wild fish would produce a higher-quality, more durable fishery. They were right.

Today the Madison, Big Hole, Yellowstone, Missouri, Bighorn, Beaverhead, Ruby, Boulder, Stillwater, and Smith Rivers are entirely or substantially wild trout fisheries managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP). On the prairie east of the divide, the Missouri River system was reshaped by the Pick-Sloan dams of the mid-20th century: Fort Peck Reservoir, completed in 1940, became one of the great walleye and lake trout reservoirs of the West. Today FWP balances hatchery and wild management, blue-ribbon trout protection, native species recovery (including bull trout, Yellowstone cutthroat, and westslope cutthroat), and prairie reservoir fisheries, all on a budget supported by some of the most engaged anglers in any state.

The Best Fishing Spots in Montana

The Madison River is Montana's most famous fly fishing destination, a 100-mile freestone river running from Yellowstone National Park through Hebgen Lake, the Bear Trap Canyon, and the Three Forks confluence. The 50 miles between Quake Lake and Ennis are essentially a continuous riffle-run that fly anglers call the longest riffle in the world; rainbow and brown trout averaging 14-17 inches with regular shots at 20-plus-inch fish. The Yellowstone River is the longest undammed river in the Lower 48, running 670 miles from the park boundary across the entire state. Its trout water from Gardiner to Big Timber is legendary, and below Big Timber it transitions into a sauger, walleye, smallmouth, and channel catfish fishery.

The Bighorn River below Yellowtail Dam is a tailwater that produces enormous numbers of rainbow and brown trout in the 16-22 inch range; it is heavily booked but always productive. The Missouri River below Holter Dam at Craig is another tailwater giant, with consistent hatches and dry-fly fishing for huge trout from spring through fall. The Big Hole River, particularly its upper reaches, holds the last self-sustaining fluvial population of Arctic grayling in the Lower 48 plus excellent rainbow and brown trout. The Smith River through its Wild and Scenic limestone canyon is a coveted multi-day float requiring a permit lottery.

The Beaverhead, Ruby, Boulder, Stillwater, Gallatin, and Blackfoot all have their devoted partisans. Spring creeks at DePuy, Armstrong, and Nelson near Livingston offer technical sight-fishing for educated browns. Fort Peck Reservoir, on the Missouri in eastern Montana, is the state's biggest impoundment and a national-class walleye fishery, also producing northern pike, lake trout, smallmouth, and even paddlefish snagging downstream. Flathead Lake holds lake trout, lake whitefish, and a controversial but big lake trout population.

Georgetown Lake, Hebgen Lake, and Canyon Ferry round out the lake list.

Game Fish Species You'll Find in Montana

Rainbow trout dominate most blue-ribbon trout rivers, with self-sustaining populations of wild fish averaging 14-18 inches and trophy fish to 25-plus inches in tailwaters. Brown trout are widespread, particularly strong in the Madison, Missouri, Big Hole, and Bighorn; the state record brown exceeds 32 pounds (from a Wibaux County reservoir). Westslope cutthroat are native west of the Continental Divide and are the focus of intense conservation efforts; Yellowstone cutthroat are native to the Yellowstone drainage and likewise protected. Bull trout, listed as Threatened under the federal ESA, exist in the Flathead system and several other waters under strict catch-and-release; specific permits and identification rules apply.

Brook trout populate small mountain streams and high-elevation lakes. Arctic grayling are present in the upper Big Hole and several mountain lakes. Mountain whitefish are abundant in essentially every trout river and are an underrated fly target. Lake trout (mackinaw) live in Flathead, Whitefish, Hungry Horse, and other deep western lakes.

Walleye, sauger, and saugeye dominate Fort Peck, Canyon Ferry, Tiber, and the lower Yellowstone. Northern pike thrive in many western Montana lakes (some considered illegally introduced). Smallmouth bass have expanded across the lower Yellowstone. Paddlefish, channel catfish, blue suckers, and pallid sturgeon round out the prairie river fauna.

Burbot, kokanee, and largemouth bass are present in select waters.

Fishing Licenses and Regulations in Montana

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) manages all fishing regulations. A resident annual fishing license is approximately $31 (with conservation license), and a nonresident annual is around $111. Two-day, ten-day, and other short-term nonresident options exist. The state divides waters into Western, Central, and Eastern Districts with separate regulations, and many rivers have specific water-by-water rules.

Statewide trout daily limits vary; many blue-ribbon rivers are catch-and-release for rainbow trout, with limited harvest of brown trout in some sections. Bull trout are catch-and-release statewide except for narrowly defined harvest waters that require a special permit. Cutthroat trout in many waters are catch-and-release. Walleye, pike, and bass have generous limits on prairie reservoirs and rivers (often more than 5 fish daily) to encourage harvest.

Fort Peck has specific lake trout retention rules. Aquatic invasive species inspection is mandatory at many border crossings; trailers must be cleaned, drained, and dried. The Smith River requires a permit obtained through an annual lottery in February. Many private spring creeks require rod fees.

Always check the current FWP regulations and the specific water rules.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Montana

Most Montana rivers are open year-round for trout fishing, but spring runoff (typically late May through early July) makes many freestone rivers unfishable. The Madison, Bighorn, and Missouri tailwaters fish through runoff because their flows are dam-regulated. Spawning closures are in effect on numerous tributaries and side channels to protect rainbow and brown trout spawning beds; specific closures vary by river. Yellowstone Park rivers (which Montana borders) follow National Park Service seasons, opening Memorial Day weekend.

Walleye and pike fishing peaks in May-June post-spawn and again in October. Ice fishing is common in eastern reservoirs from December through March.

Local Fishing Tips for Montana Anglers

If you fish Montana once in your life, time it for the salmon fly hatch on the Madison or Big Hole, typically the third week of June through early July. Big stoneflies emerging from the river bring trout to the surface for the largest dry flies of the year, and a #4 Norm Wood Special or Sofa Pillow can produce the trout of a lifetime. For year-round consistency, the Bighorn below Yellowtail Dam fishes dependably with size 18-22 midges, scuds, and sowbugs all winter and erupts in baetis hatches in March-April and pale morning duns in July. The Missouri at Craig is a dry-fly machine in July and August: trico spinners in the morning, pale morning duns midday, caddis at dusk.

Bring a good wading staff: Madison rocks are slick and boulder-strewn, and the Yellowstone has aggressive currents. Hire a guide for at least your first day on any unfamiliar river; Montana guides are professional, ethical, and worth every dollar. For Fort Peck walleye, troll bottom bouncers with crawler harnesses on the rocky points and reefs in May-June, then jig deep humps in July. Always check the wildfire smoke forecast in August; some rivers go on hoot owl restrictions when water temperatures exceed 73 degrees, requiring fishing only in early morning to protect fish.

Montana Fishing FAQ

What is the best month to fly fish in Montana?

July is generally the most reliable month statewide. Spring runoff has cleared, salmon flies have hatched on the Big Hole and Madison, and pale morning duns are emerging on the Missouri and Bighorn. June can be exceptional but is runoff-dependent. September offers fewer crowds and excellent terrestrial fishing with hoppers.

Do I need a guide to fish Montana?

No, but most first-time visitors benefit enormously from a guide on at least one day, especially on rivers like the Madison or Yellowstone where reading water and matching hatches takes local experience. Montana licenses outfitters strictly, and a good guide can compress a week of learning into a single day on the water.

Can I keep trout in Montana?

It depends on the water. Many blue-ribbon rivers like portions of the Madison, Beaverhead, and Big Hole are catch-and-release for some or all species. Eastern Montana waters often allow generous harvest. Bull trout are essentially catch-and-release statewide.

Read the regulations specific to your stretch before you keep any fish.

How do I get a Smith River permit?

The Smith River requires a permit for the four-day, 59-mile float through its limestone canyon. FWP runs an annual lottery with applications accepted in January and February each year. Demand vastly exceeds supply, but cancellations and a separate cancellation list provide some access throughout the season.

Are there warm-water species in Montana?

Yes. Fort Peck Reservoir is a national-class walleye fishery and also holds northern pike, lake trout, and smallmouth bass. Canyon Ferry, Tiber, and the lower Yellowstone produce walleye, sauger, and smallmouth. Eastern Montana reservoirs and prairie rivers host catfish, pike, and even paddlefish snagging in spring.
