The transcontinental railroad in the 1880s brought sport anglers from the East. By the 1920s and 1930s, lodges along the Madison, Big Hole, and Yellowstone catered to fly anglers from coast to coast. The 50 miles between Quake Lake and Ennis are essentially a continuous riffle-run that fly anglers call the longest riffle in the world; rainbow and brown trout averaging 14-17 inches with regular shots at 20-plus-inch fish. The Yellowstone River is the longest undammed river in the Lower 48, running 670 miles from the park boundary across the entire state. The Bighorn River below Yellowtail Dam is a tailwater that produces enormous numbers of rainbow and brown trout in the 16-22 inch range; it is heavily booked but always productive. Game Fish Species You'll Find in Montana

Rainbow trout dominate most blue-ribbon trout rivers, with self-sustaining populations of wild fish averaging 14-18 inches and trophy fish to 25-plus inches in tailwaters. Brown trout are widespread, particularly strong in the Madison, Missouri, Big Hole, and Bighorn; the state record brown exceeds 32 pounds (from a Wibaux County reservoir). Westslope cutthroat are native west of the Continental Divide and are the focus of intense conservation efforts; Yellowstone cutthroat are native to the Yellowstone drainage and likewise protected. Bull trout, listed as Threatened under the federal ESA, exist in the Flathead system and several other waters under strict catch-and-release; specific permits and identification rules apply.

Brook trout populate small mountain streams and high-elevation lakes. Arctic grayling are present in the upper Big Hole and several mountain lakes. Fishing Licenses and Regulations in Montana

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) manages all fishing regulations. A resident annual fishing license is approximately $31 (with conservation license), and a nonresident annual is around $111. Two-day, ten-day, and other short-term nonresident options exist. The state divides waters into Western, Central, and Eastern Districts with separate regulations, and many rivers have specific water-by-water rules.

Statewide trout daily limits vary; many blue-ribbon rivers are catch-and-release for rainbow trout, with limited harvest of brown trout in some sections. Bull trout are catch-and-release statewide except for narrowly defined harvest waters that require a special permit. Cutthroat trout in many waters are catch-and-release. Walleye, pike, and bass have generous limits on prairie reservoirs and rivers (often more than 5 fish daily) to encourage harvest.

Fort Peck has specific lake trout retention rules. Aquatic invasive species inspection is mandatory at many border crossings; trailers must be cleaned, drained, and dried. The Smith River requires a permit obtained through an annual lottery in February. Many private spring creeks require rod fees.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Montana

Most Montana rivers are open year-round for trout fishing, but spring runoff (typically late May through early July) makes many freestone rivers unfishable. The Madison, Bighorn, and Missouri tailwaters fish through runoff because their flows are dam-regulated. Spawning closures are in effect on numerous tributaries and side channels to protect rainbow and brown trout spawning beds; specific closures vary by river. Yellowstone Park rivers (which Montana borders) follow National Park Service seasons, opening Memorial Day weekend.

Walleye and pike fishing peaks in May-June post-spawn and again in October. Ice fishing is common in eastern reservoirs from December through March.

Local Fishing Tips for Montana Anglers

If you fish Montana once in your life, time it for the salmon fly hatch on the Madison or Big Hole, typically the third week of June through early July. Big stoneflies emerging from the river bring trout to the surface for the largest dry flies of the year, and a #4 Norm Wood Special or Sofa Pillow can produce the trout of a lifetime. For year-round consistency, the Bighorn below Yellowtail Dam fishes dependably with size 18-22 midges, scuds, and sowbugs all winter and erupts in baetis hatches in March-April and pale morning duns in July. Bring a good wading staff: Madison rocks are slick and boulder-strewn, and the Yellowstone has aggressive currents. Hire a guide for at least your first day on any unfamiliar river; Montana guides are professional, ethical, and worth every dollar. For Fort Peck walleye, troll bottom bouncers with crawler harnesses on the rocky points and reefs in May-June, then jig deep humps in July. Always check the wildfire smoke forecast in August; some rivers go on hoot owl restrictions when water temperatures exceed 73 degrees, requiring fishing only in early morning to protect fish.
