Spring (March through May) is the rockfish trophy season — large prespawn fish migrate into the upper bay to spawn, and Maryland traditionally opens a trophy season starting around the third weekend in April (subject to annual ASMFC adjustments). White perch and yellow perch run hard in March and April. Spring also brings shad runs in the Susquehanna and the upper Potomac. Local Fishing Tips for Maryland Anglers

First: tides are everything in the bay. Rockfish, white perch, and bluefish all bite hardest on moving water. A slack tide in the Bay Bridge piers means you might as well take a coffee break. Second: respect rockfish handling.

Maryland's summer high-water-temperature closures exist because release mortality climbs sharply when surface temperatures exceed 75 degrees. Use circle hooks (now mandatory for striped bass when using natural bait), revive fish thoroughly, and avoid fishing for rockfish when oxygen and temperature stress are high. Third: don't ignore white perch. Pound for pound the most productive bay species — bring a light spinning rod and a bottom rig and a perch fillet shore lunch is one of the best meals in fishing.

Sixth: register your boat and learn the bay channels — the Chesapeake's flats can drop suddenly into shipping lanes, and barge traffic is constant.
