Oregon's fishing history is a salmon and steelhead epic, and the central character is the Columbia River. Game Fish Species You'll Find in Oregon

Salmon are the soul. Spring chinook returning in March, April, and May to the Columbia, Willamette, Rogue, and several coastal rivers are the most prized table fish, with their high oil content from the long ocean migration. Fall chinook from August through October are the trophy fish, with 30- and 40-pound chrome-bright kings on the Columbia, Tillamook Bay, Nehalem Bay, and the Rogue. Coho (silvers) run in late summer and fall on coastal rivers and the lower Columbia, with hatchery selective fisheries open in many systems.

Sockeye in June and July run the upper Columbia. Chum are present in select tributaries but heavily protected. Steelhead are the soul of fly fishing, with summer-run fish on the Deschutes, John Day, North Umpqua, and lower Rogue and winter-run fish on virtually every coastal river. Fishing Licenses and Regulations in Oregon

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife issues fishing licenses to anyone age 12 and older, and a separate Combined Angling Tag is required to harvest salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, or halibut. The state uses an electronic licensing system through the MyODFW app and online portal. Tags include the salmon-steelhead-halibut Combined Angling Tag, the Hatchery Harvest Tag, the Columbia River Basin Endorsement, and a separate Two-Rod Validation if you want to fish two rods on lakes that allow it. Punch cards must be filled out before moving the fish in many cases — Oregon has very strict harvest reporting rules and you must record date and water immediately.

Sturgeon are catch and release in most waters with rare retention windows on the lower Columbia. Wild steelhead are mostly catch and release statewide. Rivers are categorized as zones with separate regulations: coastal, Willamette, Columbia, Snake, southwest, central, southeast, and northeast. Regulations change frequently, sometimes within a season, and the agency posts in-season updates online.

Halibut openings are managed by quota and announced through ODFW news releases. Boating regulations require Aquatic Invasive Species permits on motorized boats and on out-of-state-registered nonmotorized boats over 10 feet.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Oregon

Spring chinook on the Columbia and Willamette runs March through May. Summer steelhead on the Deschutes peaks July through September. Fall chinook on the Columbia and coastal rivers fishes August through October, with Buoy 10 in late August being the headliner. Winter steelhead on coastal rivers runs from December through March.

Pacific halibut all-depth seasons typically open in May and June with quota-limited days. Albacore tuna are 30 to 60 miles offshore from late July through September. Trout fishing in the high lakes is at its best from late June through September, while the Deschutes salmonfly hatch hits in late May and early June. Smallmouth on the John Day is best from June through September.

Local Fishing Tips for Oregon Anglers

First, learn the difference between hatchery and wild fish. Hatchery fish have a clipped adipose fin, and on most Oregon waters you can only keep clipped fish — wild fish must be released unharmed. Carry a measuring board and learn to identify a clipped fin instantly. Two, on the Deschutes, do not just fish the famous water — the lower river below Sherars Falls is enormous and underfished, and the salmonfly hatch is a true once-in-a-lifetime event in late May.

Three, for spring chinook on the Willamette and Columbia, learn to troll a herring or a flasher-and-spinner combo at the right depth — most fish are caught in 10 to 30 feet of water near current breaks.
