The state has produced numerous trophy stripers over 50 pounds. Summer flounder (fluke) are the workhorse table fish from May through September, with Block Island Sound and Narragansett Bay producing 5- to 10-pound class fish. Scup (porgy) are abundant from May through October and are a beloved family fishery. Tautog (blackfish) are a structure-loving fall and spring species pursued with green crabs and asian crabs around rocks and wrecks, with trophy fish over 10 pounds caught annually. Black sea bass have rebounded dramatically and now provide a major recreational fishery from May through November.

False albacore and bonito show up in late summer and early fall and offer some of the fastest, most addictive light tackle saltwater action in the country. August and September are the heart of the fishing year, with fluke, scup, sea bass, blues, and stripers all in play and the false albacore arriving in late August.

Early to mid October is peak striper migration, with surf casters working the South County beaches around the clock. Tautog season heats up again from late September through November. Cod and offshore tuna fisheries pick up in late summer and fall. Winter is mostly downtime, though some anglers chase cod offshore and tautog in deeper structure when weather allows.

Local Fishing Tips for Rhode Island Anglers

First, learn the breachway tides. Charlestown, Quonochontaug, and Weekapaug breachways concentrate striped bass and bluefish on every moving tide, but the bite windows are narrow. Get there an hour before peak current and fish through the change. Two, for Block Island stripers, hire a charter your first time.

The trolling tactics, the eeling at night, and the navigation between the rips are specific local knowledge and a charter day will teach you more than ten DIY trips. Three, in the surf, fish the overnight tide on a new or full moon. Big stripers cruise the wash at night, and a single dark eel or a wooden swimming plug fished slow can produce a fish of a lifetime. Four, do not skip the false albacore window.

Late August through mid October, schools of albies blitz bait pods off the South County beaches and harbors, and a 9-weight fly rod or light spinning gear with a small metal jig will get you on fish that pull harder than anything their size has any right to. Five, learn to fish tautog. They are a different game — slack tide, near rocks, with a green crab on a snelled hook — and a 10-pound tog is a serious trophy. Six, watch the wind.
