Long before statehood, Osage and Missouria peoples fished the Big and Current Rivers, used dugout canoes on the Missouri, and harvested freshwater mussels and gar from oxbow lakes. The Missouri River, the longest river in North America, was the great east-west artery for Lewis and Clark's expedition in 1804-1806, and their journals describe astonishing catches of paddlefish, sturgeon, and catfish. Lake of the Ozarks is the bass-tournament capital of the Midwest, a 54,000-acre serpentine reservoir created by Bagnell Dam on the Osage River. Its 1,150 miles of shoreline are studded with rocky bluffs, docks, and brush piles holding largemouth and Kentucky spotted bass year-round; tournaments run nearly every weekend from March through November. Bull Shoals Lake on the Arkansas border is a deep, clear reservoir famous for largemouth, smallmouth, and Kentucky bass, plus a strong walleye population and excellent crappie. Table Rock Lake, immediately downstream of Bull Shoals' headwaters, is one of the top smallmouth bass lakes in America, and the cold water below Table Rock Dam creates Lake Taneycomo, a tailwater rainbow trout fishery that consistently produces 20-pound-plus brown trout.

Truman Lake, at 55,600 acres Missouri's largest, is a crappie and bass paradise studded with flooded timber. Stockton Lake produces walleye and smallmouth. The four trout parks, Bennett Spring State Park, Roaring River State Park, Maramec Spring Park, and Montauk State Park, are stocked daily during catch-and-keep season (early March through October) and are wonderful family fisheries. Beyond the parks, Missouri designates trophy trout streams: the Current River, Eleven Point, North Fork of the White, Niangua below Bennett, Meramec, and the Lake Taneycomo trophy area.

The Missouri River below Kansas City and St. Louis offers blue catfish, flathead catfish, and paddlefish snagging seasons. The Mississippi River produces blue cats, flatheads, and sauger. Smaller standouts include the Big Piney, Gasconade, and Jacks Fork for smallmouth, and Mark Twain Lake for crappie and bass in northeast Missouri.

Game Fish Species You'll Find in Missouri

Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and spotted (Kentucky) bass occupy nearly every reservoir and stream in Missouri. Smallmouth are the prize of clear Ozark streams; the state record is 7 pounds 2 ounces. Walleye are stocked and naturally reproducing in Bull Shoals, Stockton, and several smaller reservoirs. Rainbow trout are stocked by the Department of Conservation in the four trout parks, in Lake Taneycomo, in trophy streams, and in dozens of urban winter trout lakes (the urban winter trout program is a beloved cold-weather amenity).

Brown trout reach trophy size in Lake Taneycomo and the North Fork of the White; the state-record brown is over 28 pounds. Crappie (white and black) are abundant in every reservoir and oxbow. Channel catfish, blue catfish (Missouri River blue cats reach over 100 pounds), and flathead catfish round out the catfish trifecta. Bluegill, redear, and longear sunfish populate ponds and streams.

Paddlefish (spoonbill) are snagged below Truman Dam and on the lower Osage in spring. Lake sturgeon and pallid sturgeon are protected and must be released. Striped bass and hybrid stripers exist in Bull Shoals and Pomme de Terre. Alligator gar are present in the Missouri Bootheel.

Fishing Licenses and Regulations in Missouri

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) manages all freshwater fishing in the state. A resident annual permit is approximately $13, and a nonresident annual permit is around $51, with daily, three-day, and seven-day options. Anglers under 16 fish free, as do residents over 65 with the appropriate exemption. A trout permit (around $10) is required to keep trout outside of trout parks; inside the trout parks, a daily trout tag is required during catch-and-keep season but no separate trout permit is needed.

The four trout parks have specific catch-and-keep seasons (March 1 through October 31) and catch-and-release winter seasons (typically Friday-Monday from mid-November through mid-February). Statewide black bass limits are six combined, with a 12- or 15-inch minimum depending on water; many reservoirs have specific slot limits. Walleye and sauger have a 15-inch minimum and four-fish daily limit on most waters, with stricter rules on specific lakes. Trout limits are four daily in trout parks and trophy streams have specific size and slot rules.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Missouri

Missouri inland fishing is open year-round for most warmwater species, though specific reservoirs have closed seasons on some species. Trout park catch-and-keep season runs March 1 through October 31; winter catch-and-release seasons run Friday through Monday from mid-November through mid-February. Paddlefish snagging is open mid-March through April 30 in designated waters. Walleye and bass spawn in March-May with no statewide closures, but some lakes have spring closed areas.

Local Fishing Tips for Missouri Anglers

Bennett Spring on opening day, March 1, is a Missouri tradition; show up at 4 a.m., draw a tag, and prepare to fish elbow-to-elbow with several thousand fellow anglers in the park's iconic countdown crowd. Use a single egg fly or a small marabou jig under an indicator, and switch to scuds and midges as the season progresses. For Lake Taneycomo trophy browns, fish the upper trophy area with mop flies, scuds, and small streamers when generation is off; navigate carefully when generation horns sound. On Lake of the Ozarks, fish the docks: countless dock owners feed minnows, and bass live under the boats.

Skip a small jig or a jerkbait shallow to docks in March-April, and switch to deep brush piles and ledges in summer. For Bull Shoals walleye, troll crawler harnesses on bottom-bouncers along main-lake points in June and again in October. Ozark stream smallmouth respond to topwater poppers and small swimbaits in summer; float-fish the Current or Big Piney with a canoe and you'll catch fish all day. For Missouri River blue cats, anchor above wing dams with cut shad on circle hooks and bring heavy gear.
