Fishing Heritage in Texas
Texas fishing is too big to summarize in a single sentence, and that is exactly the point. From the East Texas piney woods to the Hill Country limestone, the rolling plains of the panhandle, the Rio Grande border country, and the 367 miles of Gulf coastline, Texas offers more diversity in its angling than any other state in the lower 48. The state's modern fishing identity began to take shape in the 1950s and 1960s when the Texas Game and Fish Commission, predecessor to today's Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, began impounding rivers across the state for water supply and flood control. Lakes like Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, Lake Fork, Falcon, and Amistad were carved out of river valleys and quickly became among the country's most productive bass fisheries.
The introduction of Florida-strain largemouth bass in the 1970s changed everything. By the 1980s, Texas reservoirs were producing 13- and 14-pound bass with regularity, and in 1986 TPWD launched the Toyota ShareLunker program, which encourages anglers to donate bass over 13 pounds for selective breeding. Lake Fork, a relatively small impoundment in northeast Texas, has produced more ShareLunkers than any other lake in the state, including Barry St. Clair's 18.18-pound state record from 1992.
Saltwater angling has its own deep history along the coast, where commercial and recreational interests battled for decades over redfish populations before the species was declared a gamefish in 1981, sparking one of the great conservation success stories in American fisheries. Today's Texas angler can chase bass in the morning, redfish at lunch, and offshore tuna by sundown, all within the boundaries of one massive state.
The Best Fishing Spots in Texas
Lake Fork is THE Texas largemouth lake. The 27,690-acre reservoir between Dallas and Tyler has produced more bass over 13 pounds than any other body of water in Texas and is the lake every trophy hunter dreams about fishing. Standing timber, hydrilla, and Florida-strain genetics combine to make Fork a one-of-a-kind fishery. Toledo Bend, a 185,000-acre giant on the Louisiana border, has been ranked the number one bass lake in America by Bassmaster Magazine more than once and offers vast hydrilla flats and creek arms that hold tournament-winning fish.
Sam Rayburn, often called Big Sam, is the largest lake entirely within Texas and has hosted countless major tournaments. The Hill Country lakes, including Travis, Buchanan, LBJ, and Marble Falls, offer deep, clear water with white bass, striped bass, and largemouth. Falcon Lake on the Mexican border was the trophy lake of the 2000s, producing dozens of double-digit bass during its peak. The Texas coast offers an entirely different world.
Galveston Bay, Matagorda Bay, Aransas Bay, and the Lower Laguna Madre are world-class shallow saltwater fisheries where redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and snook prowl the seagrass flats. The Lower Laguna Madre near South Padre Island offers some of the finest sight-casting for redfish in the world, with crystal-clear water and tailing fish in inches of water on calm mornings. Offshore from Port Aransas, Galveston, and Freeport, anglers chase yellowfin tuna, blackfin tuna, blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, and red snapper at the deepwater rigs and floating Sargassum lines. Tarpon return to the upper coast in late summer for one of saltwater fishing's great spectacles.
The Devils River and Llano River offer Hill Country smallmouth and Guadalupe bass, the state fish of Texas.
Game Fish Species You'll Find in Texas
Largemouth bass are the headline species in Texas freshwater, with the state record at 18.18 pounds and dozens of lakes producing fish over 10 pounds annually. Florida-strain genetics dominate the trophy waters. White bass run up tributaries of nearly every reservoir each spring in legendary numbers, providing one of the easiest and most fun fisheries in the state. Striped bass and hybrid stripers are stocked in lakes like Texoma, Buchanan, and Whitney, where they grow to over 20 pounds.
Smallmouth bass live in a few clear, rocky reservoirs and Hill Country rivers. Guadalupe bass, the state fish, are native only to Texas Hill Country streams. Crappie, both black and white, are caught year-round on lakes like Fork, Sam Rayburn, and Cedar Creek. Catfish, particularly blue catfish, grow to enormous size in lakes like Texoma and the Trinity River system, with 100-pound-plus fish on record.
On the saltwater side, redfish are the king of the coast, with slot fish from 20 to 28 inches the daily target and bull reds over 40 inches caught in fall. Speckled trout, also called spotted seatrout, are the second crown jewel, with the Lower Laguna Madre producing genuine 30-inch trophies. Flounder concentrate at coastal passes in fall during the famous flounder run. Snook are present in the lower coast and have been expanding their range.
Tarpon, jack crevalle, kingfish, Spanish mackerel, and sharks are all available within reach of small boats. Offshore species include yellowfin tuna, blackfin tuna, blue and white marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo, amberjack, and red snapper, the latter being a heavily managed federal species.
Fishing Licenses and Regulations in Texas
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) regulates both freshwater and saltwater fishing. A Texas fishing license is required for anglers age 17 and older, with separate freshwater and saltwater endorsements available, plus a combination All-Water license that covers both. Annual, year-from-purchase, and short-term licenses are available for residents and nonresidents. Bag and length limits vary widely by water body, especially on bass and saltwater species.
Many lakes have slot limits, including Lake Fork's famous 16-24 inch protected slot designed to grow trophy bass. The redfish daily bag is three fish in the 20-28 inch slot, with one oversized fish per year allowed via a tag. Speckled trout regulations changed in 2024 to a 15-20 inch slot with a five-fish bag in most coastal waters. Federal red snapper seasons in the Gulf are set annually and have varied from short summer windows to extended seasons depending on stock assessments.
A Saltwater endorsement is required to fish in tidal waters. TPWD operates a robust Operation Game Thief program for reporting violations. Always check the current Outdoor Annual or the TPWD website for the most current regulations on your target water.
Best Seasons for Fishing in Texas
Texas has fishable water 12 months a year, which is part of what makes the state special. Spring is bass-spawn season across most of the state, with February through April the peak window in central and east Texas. White bass runs up tributaries from late January through March. Summer pushes freshwater fish deep, and night fishing or early morning becomes the move.
The coast heats up in late spring and stays productive through fall. Tarpon arrive on the upper coast in July and stay through October. Flounder run in November as fish migrate offshore to spawn. Fall and winter offer the best topwater bass action of the year on lakes like Sam Rayburn.
Offshore tuna fishing peaks from May through September.
Local Fishing Tips for Texas Anglers
Match your tactics to the size of Texas. On Lake Fork, fish the standing timber with big jigs, swimbaits, or live shiners during the prespawn from late February through March if you want a real shot at a double-digit bass. Hire a local guide on your first trip to any major Texas reservoir, especially Fork or Toledo Bend, because the standing timber and creek channels can be confusing and dangerous to navigate without local knowledge. On the saltwater flats of the Lower Laguna Madre, wade fishing with a topwater plug at first light is hard to beat for big trout.
Polarized sunglasses are non-negotiable for sight-casting redfish on the coast. For offshore tuna out of Port Aransas, target the floating grass lines and the deepwater rigs in 1,000+ feet of water. Bring a passport if you plan to fish across the Mexican border on Lake Falcon or Lake Amistad, as some boundary waters have specific access requirements. Watch the wind on Texas coastal flats, because anything over 15 mph turns clear water muddy and shuts down sight fishing fast.
Hill Country streams require a stealth approach since the water is gin clear and the Guadalupe bass spook easily. Always check for blue-green algae warnings on hot summer days at central Texas lakes.
Texas Fishing FAQ
What is the Toyota ShareLunker program?
It is a TPWD program launched in 1986 that asks anglers to donate any largemouth bass weighing 13 pounds or more for selective breeding and research. Lake Fork has produced more ShareLunkers than any other lake in Texas. Donating anglers receive a replica mount of their fish.
Do I need a saltwater stamp to fish the Texas coast?
Yes. Anglers fishing in saltwater or tidal areas need either a Saltwater endorsement on their license or an All-Water package. This is in addition to the basic fishing license required for anyone age 17 or older.
Where is the best place to catch a redfish in Texas?
The Lower Laguna Madre near South Padre Island is widely considered the best sight-casting redfish fishery on the entire Gulf coast, but Aransas Bay, Matagorda Bay, and the back lakes around Rockport are all outstanding. Fall and spring are peak.
Can you keep a red snapper in Texas?
Yes, but federal regulations control the season in offshore federal waters and the season changes annually. State waters out to nine nautical miles have their own regulations. Always check the current TPWD and federal red snapper season before targeting them.
What is the Texas state fish?
The Guadalupe bass, a native Hill Country species found only in clear, spring-fed Texas streams. The state has invested in stream restoration to protect Guadalupe bass populations from hybridization with introduced smallmouth bass.
