Fishing Heritage in Michigan

It is hard to overstate how important fishing has been to Michigan, or how dramatically the state's fisheries have been reshaped by human intervention over the last 150 years. Michigan touches four of the five Great Lakes — Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie — and contains over 11,000 inland lakes and 36,000 miles of streams and rivers. Anishinaabe peoples fished whitefish, sturgeon, lake trout, and walleye in these waters for thousands of years, and Sault Ste. Marie's whitefish fishery (in the rapids of the St.

Marys River) has been continuously fished since long before European contact. The 19th century saw the rise and collapse of the lake trout and whitefish commercial fishery, and the introduction in the early 20th century of the parasitic sea lamprey through the Welland Canal nearly finished the job — by the 1950s lake trout were functionally extinct in Lakes Huron and Michigan. The transformation that followed is one of the most consequential fisheries-management decisions in American history. In 1966 Michigan introduced coho salmon from the Pacific Northwest into Lake Michigan tributaries, followed in 1967 by chinook (king) salmon.

The salmon found a Lake Michigan absolutely stuffed with invasive alewife — a small forage fish whose massive die-offs were piling rotting fish on Chicago beaches by the millions — and the result was an explosion of salmon growth that built the modern Great Lakes sport fishery. Within a decade trolling for salmon out of ports like Manistee, Ludington, and Frankfort had become a national tourist economy. The story is not without complications: alewife populations have crashed in Lake Huron and stayed low in Lake Michigan, salmon plants have been reduced, and the fishery has been forced to adapt. Lake trout have rebounded substantially due to decades of sea lamprey control.

Steelhead — Pacific rainbow trout that run from the lakes up to spawn in tributary rivers — have established self-sustaining runs in dozens of rivers and create a winter and spring fishery comparable to anything on the West Coast. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Division manages the entire system, including the famous Au Sable River trout fishery — birthplace of Trout Unlimited in 1959.

The Best Fishing Spots in Michigan

Lake Michigan ports along the western shore are the salmon factory. Manistee, Ludington, Frankfort, Pentwater, Muskegon, Holland, and St. Joseph all run charter fleets that troll spoons, flies, and meat rigs for chinook, coho, lake trout, and steelhead from late April through October. The Big and Little Manistee Rivers are legendary fall salmon and winter/spring steelhead rivers.

The Pere Marquette is a National Wild and Scenic River and the most famous fly-fishing trout-and-steelhead water in Michigan, with naturalized brown trout and an iconic Hex hatch in late June. The Au Sable River — particularly the Holy Waters between Burton's Landing and Wakeley Bridge — is one of the most storied trout streams in America, where flies-only catch-and-release rules, brown drake and Hex hatches, and a 100-year-plus tradition of fly fishing meet. Lake Huron ports like Rogers City, Alpena, and Au Gres run salmon, walleye, and lake trout charter fleets, with Saginaw Bay being one of the country's premier walleye fisheries. The Detroit River and Lake St.

Clair are the largest concentration of trophy smallmouth bass in the world — the lake's clear water and gravel bottom support massive smallmouth, walleye, and muskellunge populations, and the Detroit River walleye run in late March through April attracts boats from across the Great Lakes. Lake Erie's western basin holds Michigan's share of one of the best walleye fisheries on earth. Inland, Houghton Lake (the largest inland lake in Michigan at 20,000 acres) is famous for ice fishing for walleye and northern pike. Higgins Lake, Burt Lake, Mullett Lake, and the Inland Waterway hold lake trout, smallmouth, and walleye.

The Upper Peninsula's countless lakes — Indian Lake, Manistique Lake, the Huron-Manistee chain — hold walleye, smallmouth, pike, and panfish. Lake Superior shorelines around the Keweenaw Peninsula hold lake trout (siscowet and lean), coho, chinook, and Atlantic salmon (a smaller program in select rivers).

Game Fish Species You'll Find in Michigan

Michigan's species list reads like a North American freshwater anthology. The salmon family is the headliner: chinook salmon (king), coho salmon (silver), pink salmon (an unintentional Great Lakes invasive that now spawns in some U.P. rivers in odd years), Atlantic salmon (a small but successful program in the St. Marys and a few other rivers), steelhead (lake-run rainbow trout), brown trout (lake-run and stream-resident), and brook trout (Michigan's state fish, native and self-sustaining in cold streams across the state).

Lake trout dominate cold deep water in all the Great Lakes and a few inland lakes. Walleye are arguably the most popular Michigan fish — Saginaw Bay, Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, Houghton Lake, and a hundred other inland waters all hold them. Yellow perch are abundant in the Great Lakes and inland.

Smallmouth bass are world-class on Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River and present in nearly every clear lake and river. Largemouth occupy weedier southern waters. Northern pike are statewide.

Muskellunge, Michigan's apex freshwater predator, are present in the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, the Upper Peninsula's Three Lakes Chain, and dozens of inland lakes. Lake sturgeon — a remnant of an ancient lineage — are protected and fished under tightly controlled tag-and-spear seasons on Black Lake and the Menominee River. Whitefish remain commercially and recreationally important in the Great Lakes, particularly Lake Superior.

Burbot (lawyers, eelpout) are caught through the ice. Channel catfish are present in the southern rivers.

Fishing Licenses and Regulations in Michigan

Michigan anglers age 17 and older need a Michigan fishing license, available as resident annual, nonresident annual, daily (24-hour), and senior options through the Michigan DNR. A single all-species license covers both inland waters and the Great Lakes — there is no separate saltwater or trout stamp at the basic level, though there is a separate trout regulation framework. Daily creel limits include 5 walleye (15-inch minimum statewide; some special regulations on specific waters), 5 black bass with 14-inch minimum on most waters (some waters higher; some catch-and-release-only seasons), 5 northern pike (24-inch minimum on most waters), 1 muskellunge (42-inch minimum on most waters; 50 inches on some), 5 trout/salmon combined in most Great Lakes waters with size limits varying by species (chinook 10-inch; lake trout 24-inch; brown trout 15-inch in many waters), 25 yellow perch in Lake Erie/Detroit River system. Inland trout streams operate under either General Trout Regulations (Type 1-4 streams with varying creel/size/seasons) or special regulations on streams like the Au Sable Holy Waters (flies only, catch and release on most species).

Lake sturgeon are managed through tag-only seasons on specific waters (Black Lake, Menominee River) and are otherwise catch-and-release with strict reporting requirements. Aquatic Invasive Species rules require boats and gear to be drained, cleaned, and dried between water bodies. Salmon snagging is prohibited; foul-hooked fish must be released.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Michigan

Michigan fishing follows a strict legal and biological calendar. Spring (March through May) opens with the famous Detroit River walleye run starting in late March and peaking through April. Lake Erie walleye fishing peaks April through June. Steelhead push up Great Lakes tributaries from March through May.

Inland trout season opens the last Saturday of April. Summer (June through August) is salmon trolling on Lake Michigan, Saginaw Bay walleye, smallmouth bass on Lake St. Clair and the Inland Waterway, and the famous Au Sable Hex hatch in late June. Bass season opens generally the third Saturday in May (catch-and-immediate-release periods may apply earlier).

Fall (September through November) is the king salmon run up Great Lakes tributaries, when chinooks of 20+ pounds blacken rivers like the Manistee, Pere Marquette, and Betsie. Steelhead arrive behind the salmon. Walleye fishing on Lake Erie peaks again. Muskie fishing is at its best as water cools.

Winter (December through March) is ice fishing season — Saginaw Bay walleye, Houghton Lake walleye and pike, U.P. lakes for whitefish and lake trout, and inland lakes statewide for panfish, pike, and walleye. Steelhead fishing on tributaries continues all winter for hardy anglers.

Local Fishing Tips for Michigan Anglers

First: time the salmon run. The chinook spawning run in Michigan rivers is short and intense — late August through mid-October depending on river temperature. Watch DNR salmon-run reports and lodge updates closely. Second: respect the Great Lakes weather.

Lake Michigan and Lake Superior can build dangerous waves with little warning; check Marine Forecasts before launching, and don't trust a calm shoreline to predict offshore conditions. Third: ice-fishing safety in Michigan is non-negotiable. The state averages multiple drownings each winter from anglers going through unsafe ice. Carry ice picks, a float suit, and follow guide reports for current conditions before driving on any lake.

Fourth: hire a charter for your first trolling trip on Lake Michigan or Saginaw Bay. The boats are equipped with downriggers, planer boards, and electronics that take years of practice to use well, and you'll learn more in one trip than from a season of YouTube. Fifth: the Au Sable Holy Waters are special — flies only, catch-and-release, and worth treating with the reverence Michigan trout fishermen give them. Bring a riverboat or wade carefully, and know your hatches.

Sixth: smallmouth on Lake St. Clair are most consistent in clear water with light wind — drift-fishing tubes and dropshot rigs over gravel bars in 10-15 feet of water is the local standard.
