Idaho is, by any reasonable measure, one of the great trout states of the American West, and its angling history is the story of how cold water, glacial geology, and inland anadromous runs combined to produce some of the most storied rivers in the world. The Shoshone, Bannock, Nez Perce, and Coeur d'Alene peoples fished the Snake, Salmon, Clearwater, and Coeur d'Alene rivers for thousands of years, harvesting salmon and steelhead that pushed up from the Pacific Ocean a thousand miles inland. The Salmon River — the famed "River of No Return" — once ran red with sockeye, chinook, and steelhead in numbers that defined the seasons of inland Native life. Lewis and Clark, descending the Clearwater in 1805, wrote of fish so abundant they could be caught by hand.

Mining and agricultural development transformed the state's water through the late 1800s, and the construction of dams on the Snake and Columbia systems through the 20th century cut off most of those historic salmon runs from their headwaters. The Hells Canyon Dam complex, completed in the 1960s, ended salmon access to nearly all of central Idaho. But Idaho's fly-fishing identity didn't die — it was reborn around its remarkable spring creeks and freestone tailwaters. Henry's Fork of the Snake, near Island Park, became and remains one of the most legendary trout rivers on Earth, a chalk-stream-style spring creek where giant rainbows sip mayflies in clear water and where almost every important contemporary fly fisher — from Lefty Kreh to Mike Lawson, who founded Henry's Fork Anglers in Last Chance — has come to make a name.

The South Fork of the Snake, the Big Wood, the Clearwater, the Henrys Lake outlet, and Silver Creek (a Sun Valley spring creek) all grew into bucket-list destinations. Idaho still hosts an inland steelhead run on the Salmon and Clearwater, with fish that travel 800-plus miles from the Pacific to spawn. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game manages an enormous and varied resource — from alpine cutthroat lakes accessible only by horse train to bass and walleye reservoirs in the warmer south.

Henry's Fork of the Snake River is THE river — the spring creek of legend, flowing out of Henrys Lake through Island Park and the Railroad Ranch (Harriman State Park) section, where the fly fishing is so technical and the trout so educated that the river has become a kind of graduate school for dry-fly anglers. The Ranch is the postcard stretch — slow, glassy, weed-choked, and full of 18-to-22-inch rainbows that demand 6X tippet and a perfect drift. Box Canyon, just upstream, is the riffle-pocket-water alternative, where bigger flies and bigger fish reward the willing. Henrys Lake itself, sitting at 6,470 feet, holds the largest cutthroat trout most anglers will ever see — 5-pound Yellowstone cutthroats and Hybrid "cutbow" trout regularly cruise the lake's weed lines.

The South Fork of the Snake River, near Idaho Falls, is the other Idaho fly-fishing pillar — a tailwater out of Palisades Reservoir that runs clear and cold and holds wild Yellowstone cutthroat, browns, and rainbows. The cottonwood-lined canyon below Conant produces the famous fall hopper-dropper fishing. Silver Creek, a private-public spring creek south of Sun Valley, is hallowed water — Hemingway fished it, the Nature Conservancy preserves it, and its dimpling rainbow and brown trout will humble any angler. The Big Wood River through Ketchum, the Lochsa, the Selway, and the Middle Fork of the Salmon (in the heart of the Frank Church Wilderness) all offer drift-boat and wading water for native cutthroat.

The Clearwater River near Orofino is the inland steelhead king — B-run steelhead from the Pacific arrive in fall after a 500-mile inland journey, and 20-pound class fish are caught every season. The Salmon River fishes for steelhead and the same epic trout. Coeur d'Alene Lake in the Idaho panhandle is a deep, glacial lake holding massive chinook salmon (kokanee), northern pike, smallmouth bass, and a famous summer kokanee fishery. Lake Pend Oreille is the largest lake in Idaho and once held the world-record rainbow (kamloops).

Brownlee Reservoir on the Snake holds smallmouth bass and crappie. Bear Lake on the Idaho-Utah border is home to the Bonneville cisco and the rare Bear Lake cutthroat.

Game Fish Species You'll Find in Idaho

Rainbow trout dominate Idaho's reputation, and the Henry's Fork rainbow is the most studied trout in the West. Yellowstone cutthroat are native to the South Fork of the Snake and most eastern Idaho waters, and protecting them is one of IDFG's central missions. Westslope cutthroat are the native trout of the Clearwater, Salmon, and St. Joe drainages.

Brook trout fill many high-mountain lakes. Brown trout are abundant in the Big Wood, the South Fork, and the Henry's Fork below the Ranch. Bull trout — large, char-like predators — are protected in many drainages but provide a cult catch-and-release fishery in select waters. Steelhead — sea-run rainbow trout — push up the Snake-Salmon-Clearwater system from October through April and represent one of inland America's great migratory runs.

Chinook salmon (spring and summer) return to the Salmon River and Clearwater in much-reduced numbers. Kokanee (landlocked sockeye) thrive in Coeur d'Alene, Pend Oreille, Dworshak, and Anderson Ranch reservoirs. Smallmouth bass dominate the warmer Snake River reservoirs (Brownlee, Oxbow, Hells Canyon) and lower Coeur d'Alene. Largemouth bass, walleye, perch, and crappie are found in southern Idaho reservoirs.

Northern pike are abundant in Coeur d'Alene Lake and the Pend Oreille River. White sturgeon — North America's largest freshwater fish — live in the Snake River below Hells Canyon and are catch-and-release-only.

Fishing Licenses and Regulations in Idaho

Idaho residents and visitors 14 and older need an Idaho fishing license. A separate steelhead permit is required for steelhead fishing, and a salmon permit for salmon. Many waters require specific tags and have detailed regulations — Idaho's regulations book is famously thick. General trout limit is 6 per day on most waters but many rivers have reduced limits, slot limits, or are catch-and-release only (the Henry's Fork Ranch, much of Silver Creek, sections of the South Fork, the Big Wood, and others).

Bull trout are catch-and-release statewide. Sturgeon are catch-and-release with mandatory tackle restrictions. Steelhead seasons are tightly managed, with daily and season limits and barbless-hook requirements. Two-pole permits are available for an additional fee.

Always consult the Idaho Department of Fish and Game annual regulations before fishing — Idaho has some of the most water-specific rules in the nation.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Idaho

Trout fishing on Idaho's blue-ribbon rivers generally opens Memorial Day weekend — the Henry's Fork Ranch opens June 15, a date famously announced as the start of summer for fly anglers. The salmonfly hatch on Box Canyon and the South Fork in late June is one of the great hatches in North America. PMD (pale morning dun) and green drake hatches dominate July. Hopper season runs August through September.

Steelhead fishing on the Clearwater opens in September and runs through April, with prime fishing October through November. Coeur d'Alene Lake kokanee bite peaks June through August. Sturgeon fishing in the Snake River canyon is a year-round pursuit but best in spring and fall.

Local Fishing Tips for Idaho Anglers

On the Henry's Fork Ranch, leave the 9-foot 5-weight at home and bring a 10-foot 4-weight with 12-foot leaders tapered to 6X — sometimes 7X. Match the hatch carefully. PMDs in July, green drakes mid-summer, and Tricos in August. Wade quietly.

The Ranch trout see thousands of flies a season and reject anything that drags. On the South Fork, fish the side channels and inside seams — the cutthroat hold tight to structure. For steelhead, swing flies on a Spey rod through tail-outs and pocket water at first light, and don't waste effort on midday sun. Match running line to the season — heavier sink-tips in cold water.

For Coeur d'Alene kokanee, troll dodger-and-pink-hoochie rigs at 30 to 80 feet behind downriggers. Always check fire and access closures during summer — Idaho's fire seasons can shut down access to entire river drainages with little notice.
